I don't remember - might have been a link from Helen or one of the other local runners. I linked you up to the "honor roll" on my North Woods Trail Running blog - let me know if you want it removed.

Hey Chris - just found your blog. I ran the 50 mile at Surf the Murph last year and Afton 25K for the last 4 - great races with great people! Afton is always a bugger, especially with the heat and humidity on race day.

The local trail/ultra running crew is having a group run/river swim/picnic on Labor Day out at Afton if you're interested in coming. Not sure how many will be there to run long since many of us are running ultras at Voyaguer Quest/Lean Horse/North Country this weekend and Superior the week after, but I'm sure there will be several of the "Afton regulars" out on the trails.

I love reading blogs from other MN runners.

Glad Bill got to see someone out there on the course. I missed him up there because he had to get back to the store for a clinic he was teaching. It just was not a good day for me on the course. My allergies flared up from the humidity and thickness of everything in the air...it was horrible. Great training runs did not translate into a great race this time, but I'm darn proud that I finished despite everything going wrong. I'm really hoping to come back to Afton next year, for the 50K this time, and have a better race.

I was wondering the same thing! Trail running does tend to attract the "Grizzly Adams" sort.

Thanx for the tips Helen. I hope your foot procedure goes well - I think you're making the best decision on that one for trying to compensate for that might lead to bigger troubles down the line. I'm heading out to Afton this Saturday AM and can't wait to get out there again. May need to bring some bug spray this time. Take Care.

Hey Chris - well done at Stillwater - it was a hot day out there! As for Afton... I think knowing the trails as well as you do will help A LOT. It is likely to also be hot so that's the main factor in how much it might get to you by the second loop. Starting at 6:30AM is nice though as at least the first loop shouldn't be bad - but it will be humid in the lower areas especially that back 40 loop where the stairs are. But there are lots of AS so that is a great help. Just make sure you stay hydrated (and electrolytes - def need them) and be totally fine with walking those killer hills. I see too many people try to blast them on the first loop and I think it just kills them. It depends on course on how much hill training you've done but in general I think quite a few can be walked almost as fast as 'run'. Recover on those nice flattish sections through the meadows up high and then the river trail. It'll be a beautiful run. I'll be at the finish line taking pictures!

"Moms should listen to their sons more often.
Looking back is fine as long as you look back and learn and move on, looking forward is fine as well as long as you aren’t sacrificing the present."

I've read Born to Run twice by Christopher McDougall a couple times now and have been seeing article after article pop up over the battle between shoes and no shoes. I had put on my list of things to do till I saw this this Harvard research and video than it was moved up on the to do list on the tread mill. I have to admit it was very exciting to try and like most people say it just comes natural and you feel like your running like a kid again.I ran only a mile so to be sure to let my tendons and muscles get use to this action and I have to admit it was hard to stop at that. One complaint though - I will need to build up the calluses before I attempt any longer treks.
